In support of the research activities of the recently launched EPRSC funded Future Electrical Machines Manufacturing Hub, Rolls-Royce are offering two PhD scholarships to undertake programmes of research allied to the core research programme of the Hub.
- Metallic rotor containment sleeves for permanent magnet machines – This project will address the challenges of modelling, designing and manufacturing high strength metallic sleeves for high-speed and high power density electrical machines. The project will encompass design of the stator and rotor to minimise the sleeve losses, evaluation of different candidate sleeve materials, manufacturing technology development and assessment and the manufacture of an experimental demonstrator machine. This project would suit candidates with a background in electrical or electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or mathematics. Studies will be based predominantly in Sheffield with an opportunity to spend periods at Rolls-Royce and The Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) at The University of Strathclyde. - Fibre optic instrumentation of electrical machine – This project is concerned with exploring the opportunities for integrating fibre optic based sensors into electrical machines for through-life monitoring. The opportunities include both in-process monitoring during manufacture and in-service monitoring. The project will encompass the development of methods for integrating fibre-optics into stator coil and the development and experimental testing of algorithms for extracting information on process and service conditions. This project would suit candidates with a background in electrical or electronic engineering, physics or mathematics. Support package: Each studentship covers Home tuition fees and stipend of £15,009 per annum
It is anticipated that these studentships will commence in September 2019, but there may be some degree of flexibility in start dates.
